The names describe the direction of the size change from the lens-side thread to the filter-side thread, and picking the correct direction, and understanding what each one changes mechanically, avoids most common filter fit problems.

Read the Two Ring Diameters

Every adapter ring is printed with two numbers, such as one size followed by a second size, separated by a dash. The first number is the thread that screws onto the lens itself, and the second number is the thread that accepts the filter. When the second number is larger than the first, it’s a step-up ring; when the second number is smaller, it’s a step-down ring. Reading the two numbers in order removes any ambiguity about which direction a specific ring adapts.

What Step-Up Rings Change

A step-up ring lets you buy one larger filter and use it across several lenses with smaller native threads, simply by swapping the ring to match each lens. This is a practical, cost-effective way to standardize on one higher-quality ND, CPL or diffusion filter rather than buying a separate one for every lens diameter in a kit.

The trade-off is that the filter now sits proud of the lens’s original barrel, since the ring and larger filter add both diameter and length to the front assembly. This can interfere with the lens’s original hood, which may no longer thread or clip on correctly, and it adds a bit of bulk and weight to the front of the lens. It also doesn’t guarantee identical results across every lens, since how close the added ring sits to the front element, and how that affects vignetting, varies with each lens’s specific design, especially on wider focal lengths.

Why Step-Down Rings Need Care

A step-down ring screws a smaller filter onto a larger lens thread, which means the filter’s clear glass area is now narrower than the light path the lens actually uses at wider apertures or wider focal lengths. That mismatch risks mechanical vignetting, showing up as dark corners or even a visible circular shadow at the edges of the frame.

How severe this is depends heavily on focal length and sensor format. A step-down combination that shows no visible issue on a telephoto lens paired with a smaller sensor can produce obvious vignetting on the same numerical size difference used on a wide-angle lens or a full-frame sensor, since the image circle and angle of view are both larger in that case. Because of this sensitivity, step-down rings need a specific check against the lens and sensor combination in question rather than being assumed safe from the size numbers alone.

Build a Shared-Filter Kit

Two approaches solve the multi-lens filter problem in different ways. Buying one larger, high-quality filter along with a step-up ring for each lens diameter in your kit is generally cheaper overall, reduces the number of separate filters to carry and clean, and makes it easier to justify spending more on one better piece of glass. The downside is the extra rings to keep track of, potential hood interference, and slightly bulkier assemblies on smaller lenses.

  • One shared filter plus step-up rings: lower overall cost, fewer filters to clean and store, but more small parts and possible hood conflicts.
  • Separate native-size filters per lens: cleaner mechanical fit and normal hood function, but higher total cost and more items to keep organized.

Buying separate, correctly sized filters for each lens keeps every hood working normally and avoids any stacking or clearance questions, at the cost of paying for, and keeping track of, more individual filters.
