A lens hood blocks stray light from outside the frame to reduce flare and adds a modest physical buffer at the front of the lens, while a clear protection filter adds a sacrificial glass layer directly over the front element to catch scratches, dust and fingerprints. They solve different problems, and many photographers use both together rather than treating the choice as either-or.

What a Hood Does

A hood’s primary job is optical: it blocks light that would otherwise strike the front element from outside the actual angle of view, such as sun sitting just outside the frame or a bright sky at an angle, which reduces flare, seen as hazy low-contrast patches, and ghosting, seen as repeated bright shapes, in the resulting image.

Its secondary role as a physical buffer is real but limited. Hood shape is engineered per lens and focal length, with petal-shaped designs tuned to a rectangular sensor’s coverage on wider lenses and round designs common on telephotos, so using the correct hood shape and mounting it in the correct orientation matters both for its shading effect and to avoid the hood itself darkening the corners of the frame if seated incorrectly or reversed. A hood can absorb a moderate bump or graze that might otherwise reach the front glass, but it isn’t built to protect against a hard direct impact or a serious fall.

What a Clear Filter Does

A clear or UV protection filter adds one more exposed optical surface, two additional air-to-glass boundaries on its front and back, directly in front of the lens’s actual front element. That extra surface takes the scratches, smudges, dust and rain a lens would otherwise absorb directly on its own coated glass.

There are real optical trade-offs to weigh. A lower-quality filter, or one that’s dirty or damaged, can add contrast loss, extra flare or a subtle color cast in certain lighting conditions. A clean, well-coated, quality filter in ordinary shooting conditions isn’t guaranteed to visibly degrade a typical photo, so the actual impact depends on the specific filter’s quality and the scene, rather than being an automatic downside in every case.

Use Both or Remove One

  • Backlighting: a bright light source in or near the frame is exactly when a protection filter’s extra glass surface is most likely to contribute visible flare or ghosting, so removing it for strongly backlit shots is a reasonable habit even if it stays on the rest of the time.
  • Blowing debris: environments like beaches, dusty trails or windy conditions are where a hood alone doesn’t stop small particles from settling on the front element, making a filter’s sacrificial layer more valuable, since it’s far easier to clean a filter than to risk marking the lens’s own coating.
  • Compact packing: a hood, especially a larger or non-reversible design, adds bulk in a bag, so some photographers skip it for a smaller footprint and rely on the filter, or careful framing, instead.
  • Rotating filters: if a polarizer or variable ND is mounted and needs regular adjustment, a snugly fitted hood can make reaching the front ring awkward, so some setups favor shooting without the hood when frequent rotation is expected.

Check for Obstruction

Verify the hood and any filter together at the lens’s widest zoom setting, or its actual focal length if it’s a prime, and at its widest aperture, since this is where any encroachment into the frame shows up most clearly as darkened corners.

Check this specifically on the sensor format you actually use, since the same hood and filter combination that shows no obstruction on a smaller, cropped sensor can produce visible corner darkening on a full-frame body using the identical lens, because a full-frame sensor captures a wider portion of the lens’s total image circle.
