With the switch set to declicked, the ring turns smoothly with no detents, which is intended mainly for video, where an audible or visually stepped aperture change during a recorded exposure pull would otherwise be noticeable.

Declicking removes the mechanical click sound and the visible stepped jump in exposure, but it does not by itself guarantee a perfectly smooth exposure ramp on screen. How smooth the resulting change in brightness looks depends on how steadily you turn the ring by hand, the lens’s own aperture blade response, and the frame rate and shutter settings in use, so treat declicking as removing an obstacle rather than as a guarantee of a professional-looking ramp.

Prevent Accidental Changes

An iris lock, where present, is a physical switch or lever that restricts the aperture ring’s movement, most commonly by locking it at the A position so it cannot be bumped into manual aperture control by accident during handling.
