Macro lens working distance is the physical clearance between the front of the lens (or its hood) and the subject at a given magnification, and it is a different measurement from minimum focus distance, which manufacturers generally specify from a reference plane inside the camera body rather than from the lens front. That distinction matters in practice because working distance is what actually determines whether there is room for a diffuser, whether the lens casts a shadow on the subject, and whether a skittish insect will tolerate the lens getting that close. Comparing two lenses by minimum focus distance alone can be misleading; comparing their actual working distance at a matched magnification is what tells you which one leaves usable room to work.
Two Distances with Different Reference Points
Minimum focus distance is normally measured from a fixed reference plane at or near the sensor, marked on many camera bodies by a small circle-with-a-line symbol on the top plate, to the subject at the point of closest focus. Most manufacturers document their specification this way, though it is worth checking how a given spec sheet defines it, since some older or third-party listings measure from the front of the lens instead. Working distance describes something more immediately practical: the open air gap between the front element, or the front of the lens hood if one is mounted, and the subject. Because a macro lens can be a considerable length, especially with a hood attached, the difference between the sensor-plane focus distance and the actual front-of-lens clearance can be substantial, and it is the latter number that governs what you can physically fit in front of the lens.
Check at the Intended Magnification
Lens length is not fixed across the focus range on many macro lenses, particularly designs that extend internal groups or the whole barrel forward as they focus closer. A lens might be compact at infinity focus and noticeably longer once racked to its closest focusing distance, which directly reduces working distance at high magnification even though the lens’s overall design has not changed. For this reason, working distance figures are only meaningful when tied to a specific magnification and, where relevant, the exact hood position, rather than being read off a generic infinity-focus dimension. If you plan to shoot near 1:1, ask specifically what the working distance is at that ratio, since a comparison based on infinity-length specs can significantly overstate the room you will actually have.
Make Space for Lighting
Close-up lighting equipment needs physical space to sit in front of the lens without touching the subject or blocking the light path, and working distance is the budget that space comes out of. A ring flash, twin macro flash heads, or a bracket-mounted diffuser panel all occupy some of that clearance, and too little working distance can force the light source so close that it casts a hard shadow from the lens barrel or hood, or leaves no room to angle a diffuser without it entering the frame. Working distance also affects how a subject reacts to the camera: many insects and other small living subjects tolerate a lens and light approaching from a greater distance far better than one that closes in right on top of them, so more working distance generally means fewer disturbed or fleeing subjects during a session.
Compare Usable Setups
Working distance is best compared between lenses at the same reproduction ratio rather than by focal length or minimum focus distance alone. A longer focal length macro lens generally achieves a given magnification, say 1:1, from farther away than a shorter one, since focal length is part of what determines the frame coverage at any given distance, so a 100mm or 180mm macro lens typically offers more working distance at 1:1 than a 60mm macro lens does at the same ratio. This is why longer macro lenses are frequently favored for skittish subjects like dragonflies or butterflies. Exact figures still vary by individual lens design, so treat this as the reason to check manufacturer-stated working distance at matched magnification rather than assuming any lens of a given focal length automatically wins.
