Understand the Load Path
When a heavy lens and camera are mounted to a tripod through the camera’s base, all of the combined weight and leverage runs through the lens mount, the mechanical and electronic connection between the lens and the camera body. That connection is engineered mainly to hold the lens steady during normal handheld use, not to act as the structural support point for a long, front-heavy telephoto lens on a tripod.
A lens with its own tripod collar and foot moves the support point away from the camera mount and closer to the lens’s own center of gravity, which is typically well forward of the camera body once a long telephoto lens is attached. This reduces the twisting force on the lens mount and lets the whole system sit in a more stable, naturally balanced position on the tripod head.
Over a single outing the strain from mounting a heavy lens through the camera body might not cause an obvious failure, but repeated sessions of sustained leverage on a mount that was not designed to carry it can contribute to premature wear or looseness at that connection over time, which is the underlying reason manufacturers fit a separate collar to their longer, heavier telephoto lenses in the first place.
Fit and Secure the Plate
Before relying on the collar, confirm the foot’s mounting thread matches your quick-release plate or clamp, and check whether the foot is an integrated Arca-type dovetail or requires attaching a separate plate. Manufacturer instructions for the specific lens specify the correct plate, screw size, and any torque or orientation guidance, and following them matters more than assuming any generic plate will do.
Once a plate is fitted, seat it fully in the clamp and tighten the clamp’s locking mechanism completely before letting go of the camera and lens with both hands. A plate that looks seated but is not fully clamped can slip under load, and that risk is highest with the heaviest, most front-loaded lenses that most need collar support in the first place.
It is worth periodically checking that the plate’s fasteners have not worked loose over repeated mounting and dismounting cycles, since vibration during transport and the repeated stress of clamping and unclamping can gradually loosen a screw that was properly tightened when first installed. A quick check before a shoot costs little time compared with discovering a loose plate only once weight is already on the tripod.
Balance the Complete System
Balance the whole assembly as it will actually be used, not just the bare lens and camera. A teleconverter, an extended lens hood, a battery grip, or a flash bracket all add weight and can shift the center of gravity forward or backward, so slide the plate within the collar’s foot, or rotate the collar itself, until the combined system rests level and steady with minimal effort holding it in place.
Rebalance whenever accessories are added or removed, since a setup that was well balanced with the bare lens can become noticeably front or back heavy once a converter or accessory is attached, putting more strain back onto the tripod head and your hand than the collar was meant to eliminate.
Rotate and Carry Safely
The collar also allows the lens to rotate for quick changes between horizontal and vertical framing, but confirm the rotation lock is properly engaged before releasing hand support, and keep a hand on the lens or camera during any repositioning rather than trusting the lock alone.
