The reliable way to focus on stars with a mirrorless camera is to switch to manual focus, magnify the rear screen’s live view on a bright star or distant light, and turn the focus ring until that point of light shrinks to its smallest, tightest size, then confirm the result with a full-resolution test shot rather than trusting autofocus, an infinity mark, or focus peaking on its own.

Choose a Usable Focusing Target

A focusing target needs to be bright enough to actually register on the rear screen once you zoom in electronically, which rules out faint stars in a dark sky as a starting point. A prominent bright star, a visible planet, or a distant terrestrial light such as a far-off streetlamp all work well, and any of them can be used as an initial reference during dusk or blue hour before the full night sky appears.

That daytime or dusk setup is only a starting reference, not the final word. Once the sky you are actually planning to shoot is up, the target, temperature, and ambient light have all changed enough that focus deserves a fresh check rather than an assumption that the earlier setup still holds.

Magnify and Refine Focus

Use the camera’s live view zoom, typically a stepped magnification accessed through a dedicated button or menu setting, and center it on the chosen star or light. The exact control and magnification levels vary by camera body, so it is worth checking your specific model’s manual if the button is not obvious. With the view magnified, turn the focus ring slowly and watch the point of light: it grows into a larger, softer blob when out of focus and contracts to its smallest, tightest point at correct focus.

Focus peaking, the colored overlay some cameras display over edges it detects as in focus, can point you in the right general direction, but it was designed around contrasty daylight edges, not a single point of light against a dark sky, and it is not a precision measurement. Use magnified live view as the primary check and treat peaking as a rough secondary cue at best.

Check Center and Corner Stars

Once focus looks correct in the magnified view, take an actual exposure and review it at full resolution. Check the center of the frame first, since that is the cleanest read on whether focus itself is correct. Then check the corners separately, because fast, wide lenses commonly show coma, astigmatism, or field curvature that stretches corner stars into wing or comet shapes even when focus is exactly right. That distortion is an optical property of the lens design, not a focusing error, and no amount of refocusing will make it disappear.

It also helps to separate a soft, out-of-focus blur from star trailing caused by exposure length: a focus miss tends to produce a roughly even, round softness across the whole frame, while trailing stretches stars in a consistent direction tied to their position relative to the celestial pole.

Recheck During the Session

A focus ring can be nudged out of position by handling the lens, packing up and resetting a tripod, or simply brushing against it in the dark, and temperature swings over the course of a night can cause small mechanical shifts on some lens designs. Rather than assuming a focus check done at the start of the session holds for hours, pull up a frame periodically and zoom in to confirm it is still sharp, particularly after a big temperature drop or a change of location.

There is no single interval, such as every thirty minutes, that applies universally across every lens and environment, so treat noticeable temperature changes, gear handling, or simply moving to a new composition as the practical triggers for a recheck rather than a fixed clock.
