It is built around the camera’s own focus-detection data at that one chosen point, so it behaves somewhat like a manual version of autofocus confirmation rather than a general sharpness display.
Peaking works on a completely different principle. It scans the whole live image for areas of strong local contrast and highlights them with a colored overlay in real time, giving a broad, at-a-glance sense of what looks relatively sharp across the frame, but without any directional information and without being tied to one specific point.
Verify Compatible Modes and Lenses
Focus Guide is a feature found on many EOS R-series mirrorless bodies, but it is not guaranteed to be present or to behave identically on every camera, and it typically functions in connection with a selectable autofocus point that may be restricted in certain AF area modes. Because it relies on the camera’s phase-detection data at the chosen point, its usefulness depends on subject contrast and lighting in a similar way to autofocus accuracy generally.
Check the documented behavior for your specific body, including which AF area modes support it and whether it works with adapted manual lenses or is restricted to native lenses with electronic communication, since support for older or adapted glass is not universal.
Use the Guide on a Stable Target
Focus Guide gives its most confident, repeatable readout on a subject and point that hold still, since the directional indicator and the confirmed-focus state depend on the camera continuing to evaluate the same fixed point without the subject or the framing shifting between checks. This makes it well suited to posed portraits, product setups, and static detail work where you can take a moment to walk the ring toward the indicated direction and watch the display converge.
It is not designed to promise a confident reading on every subject. Low-contrast or textureless surfaces, and anything moving relative to the frame, can produce a hesitant or uncertain-looking indication rather than a clean directional cue, since the underlying focus-detection data the guide relies on needs enough contrast at that point to work reliably in the first place.
Confirm Important Detail
Focus Guide and peaking are independent display layers and can generally be enabled at the same time, giving you a frame-wide contrast overview from peaking alongside a precise, point-specific readout from Focus Guide. Using both together is a reasonable working setup for careful manual focusing.
On low-contrast or moving subjects, both aids can become less reliable at the same time, peaking may fail to highlight meaningful edges and Focus Guide may show an uncertain reading rather than a clean direction, so for genuinely important frames the final check should still be a zoomed review of the actual captured file in playback rather than trust in either live overlay alone.
