The right aperture for a group portrait depends on how many rows deep the group is, how far the whole group stands from the camera, and how large the final image will be viewed or printed, not on a single fixed f-number that supposedly works every time. A number like f/8 might comfortably cover three rows at a moderate distance and fail badly on five rows crowded close to the lens. Arrange People Before Changing Exposure

Angling rows slightly, having a back row lean in gently, and keeping people’s shoulders overlapping rather than spread out all shrink the effective depth the aperture has to hold in focus.

This step matters more than most people expect, because no aperture fixes a poorly arranged group as reliably as arranging the group well in the first place. Watch in particular for one person who leaned forward or a child who shifted between rows, since a single face breaking the arranged depth is enough to need a retake.
